I was doing external (12 years government, 5 years firms) and have been doing internal about 7 months now. I like them both. But external has more deadline stress and yes more hours depending on where you work at. I dominately worked in employee benefit plans and medical/welfare/pensions. I worked for the IRS and then 3 firms. Any financial statements audits I did there is an element of internal auditing in it, as well as the tax audits. We look at internal controls. Now government will be a flat 40 hours. External depending on the firm I waa working 45 to 75 hours a week. I now am an internal audit for a tribe's casino so flat 40. But firms may want more hours. All can give me OT and I usually negotiated OT pay... so im not salary but hourly. Even now the firm hired for the tribe's financial statements also has to do an internal audit but they use reliance on our internal audit reports and workpapers.... so they aren't actually doing it. One thing i like about this current job is I dont track my audits hours it takes as long as it takes. I have quarterly deadlines but if im late I might get a talking to but I wont get fired. But I think thats because the place has an amazing culture. Most firms are toxic hostile environments. IRS is toxic too.
Don’t do it. Switch to engineering. Everyone I know that’s an engineer seems to be happy.
