You should look into your school's alumni network and see if there's anyone that works at Microsoft there and reach out to them!
This is a great idea, it was an alumnus who helped me when I was an applicant for my first job!
While a referral isn't necessary in landing the internship, I think it would be helpful because a lot of people are applying to big name companies like Microsoft. Is there anyone in your network that might be able to help you out with a referral this time around?
Referrals can definitely help. What have you been putting on your application? Having someone look it over may be helpful too.

Referrals are key to getting your foot in the door! The way you package yourself in your resume also helps!
