And yes I know Deloitte’s is lower than both
Everyone knows that Chico State has the most selective program. HBS is filled with people who didn’t even have the confidence to apply to Chico State.
Gonna need a lot of assumptions that will affect accuracy
Size of HBS class: ~900 (fact)
HBS class going to consulting or industry: 40% (fact)
# of people McK takes from HBS: 50 (assumption)
Assuming every person who goes into industry or consulting from HBS applies to McK, that’s 360 applicants (0.4x900). 50 hires, assuming everyone accepts an offer given to them, puts the acceptance rate at 50/360 = 13.8%.
I’ve heard that about 30% of McK applicants get accepted to H. So McK is more selective than H under these assumptions
Other scenario: 20% of HBS had worked at MBB. Let’s say McK makes up 10% of that group. There are 9000 McK consultants total. Let’s say 20% are MBA-age, and 10% apply every year. That’s 900 applicants from McK for 90 total spots at HBS, putting their acceptance rate at 10%.
Wish you’d got to it first, was not worth the effort. But interesting that we came up with very similar answers
BCG’s acceptance rate to HBS is about 40%. I would imagine McKinsey’s is similar.
Would guess the acceptance rate the other way around is a lot lower as people above have modeled out.
In my McKinsey BA class of 12, 4 ended up at HBS the others didn’t apply / did Law school / kept working . So that’s 100% from my office for mck applicants.
Not a great comparison because Harvard will accept less mckinsey people than are qualified just to have a more diverse class

Does McKinsey not do the same?
Assuming McKinsey alum applying to HBS
~8% of HBS admitted applicants had McKinsey on their resume (source: forbes)
2020 class size: ~930 students (source: hbs)
~21% of HBS grads (~195) land a consulting job (source: hbs) Let’s say a high estimate of 40% want to move towards consulting post-grad: ~ 372 applicants to the respected MBB firms
McKinsey hires ~1,000 mba consultants globally (source: poetsandquants)...
Let’s just make things easy and say McKinsey takes in around 5% of their MBA class from HBS
~ 50 HBS consultants
50/372 = ~13% acceptance rate for a HBSer applying to McK
There’d have to be around 30 McKinsey hires from HBS to have around the same acceptance rate — based off the assumption that 40% of the HBS class wants to pursue consulting and applying to McKinsey
really rough estimates but maybe paints a decent picture??
Yeah I think it used to be 40% but is definitely lower these days

Either way, doesn’t stop my stress levels from over driving these next few months lol 😅
