On the other hand......."what are employees getting for showing up in person?"...........A paycheck. You return in person because that is the expectation of your employer. Don't want to do that then quit and try to find another job.
Funny how the people pushing for RTO have private offices, flexibility, and don’t deal with the commute. If it’s so great, why aren’t they leading by example and coming in every day?
Here is what consistently bothers me- How do employers not know whether or not remote employees are getting stuff done? Collaboration is on a Zoom or Teams meeting 100% of the time. How is the company not rolling in savings from having remote work? It’s still an employer's market, but when that changes I think we’ll see the remote coming back full strength.
A lot of upper management honestly has very little respect for their workers. So they have settled on the idea that remote workers are somehow cheating the system. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but when you have celebrity CEOs ranting about remote work in public, leaders of companies all over will follow that line of thought.
When everyone was forced to work from home, employees saved all those transportation costs and meal costs. It was like a pay increase without the pay increase.
Between the 20% or more inflation since that work from home mandate and the “normal” transportation costs, employees are loosing a lot of money going into the office.
It isn’t a win-win scenario for the company and the employees. Employees are feeling the “loose” side of the scenario.
Unless you are some unicorn company that has free health care, child care, workout, and meals built into your building - it’s not a perk to go into the office.
It’s feeling like daylight saving time.
If pay increased based on inflation before performance increases and bonuses, I would be a bit more ready to go into the office.
