Because I am very good at other things (more than my peers) : Very strong quantitatively, get along easily with clients so they rely on me a lot, I have amazing creativity when it comes to thinking outside of the box, PMO projects are my favorites (since there is a lot of jumping from here and there and a lot of things happening)
2 months ago I got laid off and started asking myself some questions. I always considered myself averagely smart and I am good at everything conceptually but not when it comes to details. Is this job for me? Why other people succeed and not me? Considering that consulting is hard but not rocket science … This + my mind being always over the place, never feeling present etc… I went seeking a psychiatrist and after few test I was diagnosed with ADHD. I just started medication this week. 18/36mg concerta
1. Sleep, diet, medication, personal phone in other room if at home, Microsoft To Do.
2. Yes, after I found what worked for me.
3. It depends, I would give it another try and see if you improve with your treatment.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot! Very reassuring
I am now interviewing with other consulting firms, hopefully I can get rehired (for the 4th time with a 4th different firm)..
I just wanted to ask you few questions since I am very new to this and honestly very confused to know that maybe a part/good parts of my problems since my childhood were caused by an illness instead of what I always thought it was (lack of discipline, lack of motivation, not being in the right job, etc) .. because yes I tried corporate job for 2 years, it was great but still the same mistakes same problems (but with less stress so didn’t appear that much)
OP honestly the only thing that helped me was medication and making sure that I was managing my time better. I had to create a very strict routine that I follow daily and when I get away from my routine everyhing goes down hill. Therapy has helped me a lot too.
Thanks a lot! And if I may ask, how did therapy helped you? Cause I was proposed therapy but not sure how to make use of jt
Helped you find exactly how ADHD disable ms you at work? Helped you create habits/discipline/routine?
Thanks again
Stop doing monkey work. No more working in the weeds. That's for the muggles. Or AI. Or interns. LOL.
Those of us with ADHD are for hawk view, we're pattern detectors and we systemize (usually to find the hidden weakness to exploit LOL)... We can look at the big picture and consider all angles and layers pretty quickly to identify the a company's true north and all the things in the way (usually because it's always been done that way or some nonsense).
If someone pushes you on that, remind them they are wasting a lot of money paying a skilled strategist to do something AI or a recent grad/intern can do. Then amend your proposal to add the service of managing a team to do that BS, then subcontract it out or set up AI.
Position yourself as a consultant for strategy/pivot/audit (someone who swoops in to make big, broad recommendations and cut through the BS). Charge by the project and charge a high fee. Like seriously, just reading "page numbers, copy paste issues, footnotes" made my brain twitch.
1-) Are these problems of lack of attention to details, quality check on slides or excel, forgetting things here and there, zoning out during meetings, forgetting what was said here and there, being lazy in work and then having to stay out night because you efficiency was 20% during the day …? If yes how did you managed them? Do you have a checklist or something?
2-) If you have tried medication, did it help to manage these symptoms? Did you become better/brighter made less mistakes?
3-) Is this consulting career where things like footnote and double space and details like this matter .. the right for me or should I seek another thing?
Pretty disingenuous to promote your own startup this way. Huge turn off.
I can more than relate to this. Something that helps me is to 1) set timers to keep me on track or atleast more self aware of how much time im actually spending doing god knows what (with good intentions im sure)) to set 3 top priories for the day and to organize my day when i can do smaller, quicker tasks at the end of my day and try to get out of the way the top things first. I know with being in calls more of the day than not that is easier said than done but setting timers and limiting distractions (phone on my bed or out of sight). You can do this! Hope this helps.
Thanks for tip I didn’t think about! In some situations in the past the timer actually worked, but I never thought of constantly timing my tasks, good one!

Yes, meds will help. Give it a couple of weeks and let us know how it goes. And don’t let the docs over medicate you at first. You might need just a tiny amount to make a big difference with few side effects

And from the other commenters- set intentions, choose the one thing you’re going to get done that day and keep bringing your attention back to that one thing. Timers help too. 25 minutes at a time on the one thing.
Spend your first 25 minute sprint of the day choosing the 1-3 things that you intend to finish, and do nothing but plan how you’re going to do it. Clear your desk, get your water, close email and DND the phone, break down your 1 thing into smaller things.
For me it’s sometimes that first thing in a task that is hard to do. But if that first thing is “open document” “find a contact” or “clear desktop” - these are super easy things that make the next task flow.
Thank you 🙏🙏

Hey had these same problems and medication did help. But not making errors is also a mentality a mindset that you need to focus on too — especially knowing your higher likelihood of missing them. Building better checking systems can be learned but requires intention and a mindset that it matters
You are absolutely right! I also understood lately that indeed these things don’t matter for me as much as as they matter for my peers, while in reality they should, especially in this kind of job
Thank you for this post, it resonates with me. I likely need to pursue medication again. Dr prescribed some light meds to calm my brain earlier this year, but it turned me into a zombie first day, and second day, no impact, just dehydrated so I just stopped taking them.
I made so many mistakes in my last role, in Excel. I even checked one file numerous times and there was still a mistake. I have been feeling very low since my manager yelled at me about the very first mistake I made.
Earlier this week, I booked a vacation flight to the right city name, but wrong country. Had to pay double to fix it. I am wondering if things can get worse with aging. I don’t recall things being this bad before. That said, my sleep, nutrition, and exercise have been off too.
I started medication 2 weeks ago
DM me if you want to chat about it
