Here’s the reality:
- People in FAANG are struggling to find roles
- IVYs
- People with a ton of experience.
All these people are in product that I know who have been looking for roles for 6 months+. You’ll probably get a pay cut. And hiring managers I know are not prioritizing visa candidates.
Have you considered transferring to another dept? Internal hires have a higher success rate.
It’s not the right time to apply. And if the economy hits the fan. The new employees are always eliminated.
This is not a "real" reality tho. All 3 categories are usually looking for 300+ in TC. Op might be more realistic and not exactly in the same market.
You are between a rock and a hard place. The H1B visa is tied to your specific job at the specific company, and if you try to change jobs the new company has to accept to sponsor the visa and also you have to work in the exact same role/ field you are currently as described by the visa application. Also the clock resets in the event you or your company was starting a permanent residency process.
So that already puts a lot of extra pressure on the potential hitting company. You could start looking but try to set realistic expectations that this may not go in a positive way any time soon
Add to that the fact the upcoming Orange administration has a history of messing up with the H1B program. They severely cut the number of available visas last time and it's very likely they will try to mess with it again.
I would recommend staying with the current company as long as possible while you explore all options. Don't do any moves unless things are 100% clear between you and your potential new employer
I would wait to see what trump does while in office. I think his first few months are going to be eye opening.
God I hope so, it’s what the majority voted for
I never understood the fact that the H1B visa was introduced to fulfill high-skilled job demands. When and why did it become a path to citizenship?
I would say a job switch would by very difficult. There is so much competition for every job, why go through the expense and wait time for a visa transfer, unless the candidate is a real superstar.
Yeah, makes sense.
If you want a new job I would start look at other countries, unless you have built a life with family while on one. You will be almost impossible to get sponsored. Hopefully the h1b end in 2025 for good
It’s going to be tough. My company isn’t allowing us to sponsor unless a JD has been in market for a while. Feel free to look around but assume you’ll be at your current employer for a while.
Maybe become a citizen?
Because of sponsorship requirements many HR departments will accept H1b only if no other qualified candidates are found.
This puts you at the end of the line to start with. Add to that there are many citizens looking for work now, and it gets harder. With the impending Federal administration, I suspect it will become still more difficult.
Of course, I'm not saying you should stay in a job you don't like, but from a purely pragmatic angle, I'd expect to have to stay where you're at while, at most, looking around quietly for other options. I wouldn't even share with a trusted coworker you're looking.
What would you say is your unique skill and experience in the FinTech/credit field? Analytics and Product are surely roles for which there are non-H1b qualified candidates.
My first thought, dude just shut up and enjoy the fact you have a H1B. I'd kill for one.
Oh I’m grateful for sure, I didn’t say I wasn’t. But looking for other opportunities while on H1B is not a bad thing I don’t think
Nothing really stopping you from trying. If you have time/capacity to go through interviews - why not.
Yeah, I think I’ll start looking and applying and see how far I can get
Next to impossible. Most Orgs are no longer sponsoring. Plus the incoming "presidential" administration is going to do absolutely everything they can to eliminate your ability to find employment.
Take the leap
What’s the difference btw H1B visa and TN visa?
H-1B is a non-immigrant visa.
Can I ask why you’re leaving? I’m currently in interview process at Discover for a product manager role and curious why your leaving
Management isn’t doing well with managing everything ever since the merger was announced. It’s pretty bad. But also people are leaving now and finding jobs elsewhere where so they won’t have to worry about finding one when thoughts get let go starting in a few months
Been on a TN visa for over a year waiting for the sponsor (a software consultancy) to assing me a project and relocate to the US. Nothing yet. This is a very though job market.
Won't know til you start looking.
I switched jobs multiple times on H-1B and as long as you have a sponsor letter and visa ported over, there are no issues
Too many Americans with skills are looking for Jobs, making those who "only want to live in America", a less effective option.
Many Americans are already looking for jobs and having difficulty. I don't think sponsorship roles are a priority. Especially when qualified Americans are applying and not getting jobs. Even with degrees.
