AWS cloud application architect. Had an on-site interview with AWS a few days ago and just got an email saying they want to talk to me about next steps. The role is cloud application architect but I want to ask them about the senior cloud application architect role. I have all the relevant experience for that role and feel like I’d be a better fit for that senior role. How should I approach this conversation? Is this even possible? Amazon

Here’s the reality:
- People in FAANG are struggling to find roles
- IVYs
- People with a ton of experience.
All these people are in product that I know who have been looking for roles for 6 months+. You’ll probably get a pay cut. And hiring managers I know are not prioritizing visa candidates.
Have you considered transferring to another dept? Internal hires have a higher success rate.
It’s not the right time to apply. And if the economy hits the fan. The new employees are always eliminated.
This is not a "real" reality tho. All 3 categories are usually looking for 300+ in TC. Op might be more realistic and not exactly in the same market.
You are between a rock and a hard place. The H1B visa is tied to your specific job at the specific company, and if you try to change jobs the new company has to accept to sponsor the visa and also you have to work in the exact same role/ field you are currently as described by the visa application. Also the clock resets in the event you or your company was starting a permanent residency process.
So that already puts a lot of extra pressure on the potential hitting company. You could start looking but try to set realistic expectations that this may not go in a positive way any time soon
Add to that the fact the upcoming Orange administration has a history of messing up with the H1B program. They severely cut the number of available visas last time and it's very likely they will try to mess with it again.
I would recommend staying with the current company as long as possible while you explore all options. Don't do any moves unless things are 100% clear between you and your potential new employer
Start looking, but don't leave your job. Hard to get companies to sponsor, most would rather hire someone who doesn't need it (recent experience here).
IBM is probably hiring for H1B visa applicants.
Plzzzz give me a job
