This is good in the objective sense. You’ll be able to comfortably take care of all your needs.
Subjectively, there are some very high incomes here, hence those saying it’s not “good”.
Welcome to the bubble.
No, it’s not. The thing is there’s now a lot of tech companies that pay that for a new graduate developer, they are in their early 20s.
A good salary/total compensation is 600k+ for one person.
Welcome to the reality that is The SF Bay Area.
For those of you making ~$600K+ as an individual, you’re taking home what ~$315k w/ maxed 401k & HSA.
What are your monthly expenses?
200k is fine for one person, though BCG1 is correct that it’s not good. You don’t need 600k, but 200k is something many folks hit in their mid 20s, whether they’re SWE or not.
It's always amusing how fishbowl responses are the most out of touch (or, just from a very specific demographic). If you asked on Reddit, twitter, etc youd hear very differently. I make ~150k total comp, mid 20s, and am comfortable. I suppose I save slower for my future house than the people making 300k or more. I also hang out weekly with multiple people making 100k or less who are equally, if not more so, happy as I am
This is depressing. 15yrs of experience and late 30s and family of 4 pulling in 170k total. I thought I was doing great 😅
200k is fine, anywhere else it would buy you a lot more than in SF though.
The poverty line for a family of four in SF is 117,000, which says a lot about cost of living.
Yeah, I make less as a single M and find it doable. A nice 1BR apartment is $3-4k a month which is likely your largest expense. Just need to be smart about spending
It’s enough for one person. I wouldn’t call it “good”.
Maybe COL is more manageable in the East Bay, but I’ve always been fine even back when I was only making $75k. Depends on your definition of “good”.
It's fine but not awesome. I'm 28 and make 260k cash, plus about that much again in equity (at a recent valuation). Not Google/Fb/etc, company is well under 1k people total.
Some responses in this thread are so wildly out of touch it’s crazy.
Ok, my turn! I personally live on $2.3M total comp per year and I live in a Sprinter van. We do have a nearby laundromat, though.
I moved also to SF from overseas and make around the same. I do everything I want, live in a nice neighborhood, max out HSA/401k and still save some money every year
A little over 200k total comp
