The economy is a sham economy right now. Many of these postings are fake, their holding off on hiring, or they're trying to hire a unicorn for pennies that got laid off/fired and is desperate. The government is imploding. This will end up hurting everyone. Businesses do not like uncertainty, and despite what the common "thinking," is, private companies rely heavily on government funding, guidance, regulations, and so on. This is creating a lot of uncertainty, removing a lot of government funding from private entities, and making the regulatory and compliance environment a lot more complex. Things are going to get worse.
I'm in the same boat as you, I've been managing a team of 20 Architects and studying an MBA that completes in June. Yet every application I have made as the same answer "you have impressive skills, but we have gone with other candidates that align more closely".
I see it with my team, we have not seen much turnover in the last year and I have not made one hire this year or even has anyone leave the team.
Its down to most companies are now filling for bankruptcy or going for M&As. Leaving many of the roles advertised as non existent. Also because of the UK tax increases for companies they are leaning toward divestures or scaling down. In the USA the Trump and Musk craziness is slowing business from investing in people as they do know if they are gonna be tariffed heavily for goods.
All I can say is you have to start networking to get jobs. Honestly it's not that you are bad or anything it's really just a bad job market right now
This is impossible to answer with so little information. Just managing a team of 30 won’t get you an interview, especially in this market. How have you led them? How have you accelerated the business? Does your team hit OKRs? How do you unblock them? How do you partner with leadership, show ownership, collaborate across functions?
Director of Eng isn’t just about team size.
It could be your resume, the job market, or a wide variety of things. Most likely though it is the state of this job market. I have friends that have been looking for new roles for over a year and still can't seem to find anything. This is a really challenging time to be looking for a new role.
