I took an early retirement last year due to chronic health issues. I only taught for 2 years so I'm using Soc Security. I supplement by returning to being a substitute.
My bestest friend ever is retiring at the end of this year and is discovering (we) should have started working on the plan years ago. You are wise! I’ll tell you what I’m telling all the newbies coming in right now to start planning for retirement right now. Get into your state retirement system information meetings, union member retirement benes (if any—we have a boatload), talk to the nice insurance sales folks who bring you lunches and talk to you about how to plan and how to maximize your 401K and 123letter plans for a happier retirement life. There is a lag time between when you retire and when you begin receiving your disbursements. Do you want a little less each month to provide for beneficiaries after your death. Whew! Lots of cardio, jumping through all thes hoops and gathering the documents the require for us: an officially geriatric and an older teacher who are dun=done!
I just retired at 62 with only 16 years through URS. I took a huge hit for early retirement but the district makes up for that with 3 huge yearly incentive payments to a 403b acct in my name. Check your district to see if they have early retirement incentives.
