Not a stupid question at all! I've been thinking about this for myself as well. I think something to consider may be how you like to refer to yourself, more so then the gender stereotypes that exist (e.g. enjoying jewelry). At the end of the day, it is your own way of describing yourself and you can still reject "traditional" gender stereotypes while still being cisgender!

It sounds like you just aren’t a girly girl and that’s ok. Gender is all a social construct anyways. Just because you don’t like pink and don’t want to have a child doesn’t make you any less of a woman just as liking pink and wanting children wouldn’t make a man any less of a man.

This is helpful from you both - thank you! I've never really minded being called a woman at all. Something about being called they or them sounds nice, but I've never been offended being called a woman. At the most, occasionally I'll feel a little awkward about it but I think that is from gender norms as you've described.

I'm still working to understand the difference between not adhering to gender norms and having a change in gender. I've found myself telling my boyfriend I'm tired of being lumped in the woman category just because of my genitals, but I think I meant that still relating to gender norms?

Are there any books or podcasts you would recommend on this subject?

General question: Is there any room in corporate America for real, actionable DE&I discussions and initiatives? I've observed so many corporate versions become an advertising strategy (SM posts, diversity reports) without doing the actual work (increasing representation in senior leadership, salary analyses, having an effective reporting system for bias). Is this just how it is?

Lots of right wing hysteria about liberals trying to engineer equality of outcome to correct sexual/racial inequities (in higher ed, for example). I think we all want socioeconomic, gender and racial barriers to opportunities to be addressed, but no significant number of people really believe in equality of outcome right? This is just a straw man argument.

You CAN be that leader that people want to work with. 1st, self assessment is required. Be honest: As a leader, have you engaged in/accepted Attribution Bias with a dash of gender &/or race bias? (See the pic) This is something we all need to be aware of as we lead our teams, provide performance feedback, & model the behaviors we'd like to see more of on our teams. Be on the lookout for Attribution Bias in yourself & on your team. It's a hindrance to creating a high-performing, inclusive culture.

Hey Gente, Im applying for jobs and I wanted to get others opinion on the race part of the application process. As an indigenous LatinX I worry that if I put indigenous it won’t tick the “diversity” box for the algorithm or recruiters. I work with (not in) the I&D dept at my company and our target recruiting groups don’t include or mention indigenous. Any recruiters here that have insight?

The problem is that anybody else seems to be so welcoming and open-minded, except for this one guy. Any advices?
