Hi I work as an infection Preventionist in a subacute/LTC in central New Jersey I have been doing it for 9 months so still a baby in it but would gladly give you my perspective if you would like.
I took a course given by the state to be certified, I am now actually taking a course to become a Certified Infection Consultant (CIC) because I like doing this job that much. It can be stressful during outbreak because it all lies on you to “clean it up” (I’m very hard on myself and put all the pressure on) But when you know you helped the residents or patients stay safe by educating your staff and consistently making sure they follow all protocols it is satisfying.
So a little background, in the past in LTC facilities the infection Preventionist was usually the ADON but due to COVID the state realized that the ADONs could not have more than one title, so they had a state wide training session for LPNs or RNs to learn the trade. It was funded by my facility and it was given by Knowledge Connex. It was like ten presentations given by different people and I just watched the slide shows.
When I say clean it up I mean by learning how the outbreak first started then, educating the staff on proper infection control protocols and ensuring if something happens they know how to protect themselves and the patients. Its consistent badgering of the employees and not a very like-able job as in people don’t like being told what to do.
Wondering if you could find something of interest through the CDC?
