Pretty much all of us do SPG , some Hyatt’s then third most common is Hilton

Marriott and SPG is most common, especially since it’s one program now
I use a spreadsheet to compare all the chains’ hotels within proximity of my client site, factoring in a) number of nights; b) each chain’s current promotions (I.e. Hilton double points, SPG Green Choice, Marriott MegaBonus, plus my status with each), CPP, and pt/$ values; and c) $ value and ROI % and decide ad hoc. Recently the winner has been Hilton due to double points (around 28 points/$), but if they stop double points in 2018 then Marriott and SPG will be top for me as I’m platinum with both

SPG is the way to go
I’m top tier at Hilton and Marriott (and SPG). Since I’m on the Marriott side, I don’t get the extra SPG 75/100 night Platinum benefits. Given that, I find HHonors to be a very valuable program-good redemptions, international presence, and flexibility. If I were SPG 100 night Platinum, my response would likely differ.
In short, go for SPG if you think you’ll make 100 nights a year. If you think it will be less, I recommend Hilton.
SPG is a much better program. See if they’re doing their Platinum accelerator, where if you stay 18 nights in a 90-day period you are automatically given Platinum status.
Marriott will match your SPG status.
Spg, but trust me hotel upgrades are worth nothing.

D2 provides a very good view, what I️ would say on top is that SPG is one of 4 “transfer hubs”. Chase, Amex and Citi TYP being the other 3. Having transfer flexibility to 40+ airlines will be very useful

SPG by far has the best points system in my opinion. I've done Marriott (before the acquisition) and Hilton too, but SPG definitely won.

A2 - I just got SPG gold for the 5th year so I’ll be Gold for life. How do I get Marriott to recognize my status (annual & life)?
IME status matches over automagically, like there’s a feed between the systems. So as long as your SPG status is still gold, Marriott will be as well. At least until they merge the two
A3 - Marriott will be merging the two programs next year. Your status will carry over automatically.
