I think it really depends on your long term goals and which branch you’re talking about. If you really love criminal law and want court room experience now, there’s a good chance you get it. If you are more interested in military specific law, it’s a great opportunity but recognize that those skills don’t transfer easily. You will move often and usually to undesirable locations. I’m transitioning out next summer and have focused exclusively on criminal litigation and am now trying to make myself marketable. The last thing I’ll say is many of our jobs have big law hours, you show up at 0630 for PT and very often work until 7-8 at night.
Thanks for the reply. Army. I'm prepared for the moving around. I'm not really sure what I'm interested in the most, however clerking during law school I did find myself passionate about white collar crime and I would appreciate court room experience. I also am intrigued to get some transactional experience as I only got some of that from practical courses during school and enjoyed it, but never clerked doing that work. Also I am excited to be forced to do pt. Office jobs make me lazy/complacent and I look forward to being forced out of that.
Regarding hours were those generally m-f or at least 5 days of the week?
I appreciate your input and goodluck on your transition!
Married, fully supported by husband who works remotely for either decision. One main concern is potential future children (assuming this would be easier JAG route). Another concern is job prospects if/when leaving JAG as your salary is public and experience may be disfavorable to some firms. Also, have previously been in military for 1 year but left due to injury so aware of the general lifestyle I'd be committing to though I understand JAG would be a different experience. Thanks in advance!
