Ya air train to Jamaica then LIRR to Penn is totally safe. Jamaica is dumpy but there will be plenty of people doing the same route as you, can probably just follow them. There’s also like some concessions where the air train empties out at Jamaica so it isn’t that sketchy.
Oh wait 6am. Take the cab
Take a cab. Pre pandemic id say no issues but things have become a bit sketchy
I personally would not (F as well). I would bite the bullet for a cab. It’s flat rate from JFK into the city

I’m 26F and agree. Did the cab route literally at 6am JFK route two days ago. It’s $52 flat rate into Manhattan; better than Uber/Lyft prices.
Take the cab, the homeless and mentally ill have gotten very bold and you don’t want to be unlucky.

M1 please don’t discount other people’s experiences!
Cab. Even penn station isn’t what it used to be, specially on a holiday weekend.
Thank you everyone! Appreciate the help. I’m well traveled and familiar with public transit but knowing what trains are like in LA right now I totally understand the perspective and won’t take the risk.
Also- enjoy your trip 🎉
If this is your first time to NYC and getting on the train system, I would just take a cab.
I’d take a cab (30s M). Public transportation is less safe since the office commuters went missing.
I’ll pick u up
If you can afford the cab, just take it.
100000% take a cab
This is not a question about safety! Those who are telling you it’s not safe have no idea about NY (my parents live in Jamaica, queens and I take LiRR/subway all the time to see them). It’s about convenience and can/Uber is definitely more convenient, comfortable and probably time effective.
It actually was about safety, which is why I said I won’t be in a rush. I absolutely do not mind public transit but if I’m the only one on an empty train at 6am on a Saturday, then I would want to know that ahead of time. Especially looking out of place with a suitcase
I would tell my mom and sister to take the cab.
By the time you get out of the plane, then take AirTrain to Jamaica stop, it will easily be 630/645am..it’s safe to wait inside the station given its airport properly and you can literally go downstairs to train platform just 2 min before train arrives. I’ve done it at midnight as single female. But if you can afford taxi, Uber just do that. It’s convenient

It’s not bad at all, a hassle yes obv vs a cab but completely safe. I’m 23F and do it all the time
Please get a cab, the city is a bit different now.
I took the subway and Air train to jfk once in the afternoon. There were a lot of people and it wasn't too bad honestly until I got out to transfer to the AirTrain. There was construction so I had to go outside to get to the entrance. As I was passing by a set of stairs that lead to different air train platforms, I looked up at one and well...let's just say someone was having a service provided that I didn't expect to see in the middle of the day. Thankfully I didn't need to take those stairs 😅.
I was on the air train twice today and it’s fine
