If you get carry from associate level, then ops for sure. I took a hit of about 50k cash comp moving to ops but I’ve got over 300k in carry dollars are work now that will be worth over a million dollars in next 7 years
Depends on type, but each is around 2-3B

MD can makes a lot more than a senior Partner
BUT…. It’s all in the carry/LTIP
Comp wise not a doubt - PE ops for established shops will outcompete MBB (former M here). Mostly driven by the carry
More so for MM or LMM funds, the downside is that although you may have the same breadth of exposure in consulting, the level of advancements may not be as market leading all the time.
Personally I left AP and found a nice smooth entry as director in PE ops, leveraging more around my functional and industry experience. Helps to not be depended on for deal flow or more salesy work as that's not my spike.
Hard for me to say when's the optimum time to jump. What I can say is that it's more helpful to have extensive experience rather than joining PE ops fresh/new (e.g., less than 3-5 YOE) due to the nature of expertise you're expected to deliver. It's easier to justify to firm partners and investors when you come in with credentials of impact/turnarounds delivered.

Not only that - there’s a lot more risk as well!
If the companies do well, you do much better than MBB, if they don’t you’ll get fired
