In my experience, Hilton is by far the superior brand, but Marriott still stands out in a couple areas. Hyatt is also great but I do not stay with them enough to provide honest feedback. Marriott vs Hilton discussion below:
1) Hilton has the superior loyalty program. Points earning promotions are consistently better. For probably 16 months of the past 24, they have had a nationwide double points promotion. This means that you receive 20 points for every dollar spend, plus 10 more if you have diamond status, and 14 more if you have the Hilton credit card. The fact that you can earn up to 44 points per dollar is simply an incredible value The promotions at Marriott are very infrequent and are very minimal in comparison.
2) Hilton offers rollover nights. This means that every night you stay past gold or diamond counts towards next year’s status. Marriott stopped offering this benefit last year.
3) In my experience, Hilton is consistently better in upgrading guests. I get upgrades about 50% of the time with Hilton diamond versus 10% of the time with Marriott ambassador.
4) The customer service is hands-down better with Hilton. On the rare occasion I have a complaint, I simply submit my feedback through the app. I always receive either 20k points or my room refunded. Marriott complaints usually get only a form apology email, if that.
5) Hilton provides milestone bonuses. This means you get bonus points every x number of nights you stay. I have stayed 68 nights so far and earned 90k in bonuses. This is another benefit not offered at Marriott
6) Hilton hotels tend to be newer and there is greater consistency within brands. Hilton’s mid-level and entry-level properties are also much nicer.
7) the Hilton Amex Aspire credit card ($450/yr) comes with automatic diamond status and a $250 credit. The Marriott equivalent also offers a $300 credit, but does not provide automatic platinum or titanium. The Marriott card also gives only 6 points per dollar, versus 14 through diamond as mentioned earlier.
8) Hilton has mobile key at every property, versus maybe the 20% of Marriott properties that have it. This means I can pick my exact room before I arrive, and skip the check in desk completely and go straight to my room. Huge benefit that saves me a ton of time.
See below for where Marriott wins:
1) Number of properties. Marriott leads in market share and simply has more options to choose from. This is very beneficial for travelers, especially those who travel to smaller markets or rural areas. (This market leadership probably also explains why Bonvoy is such a crappy program...Marriott has less incentive to grow).
2) Marriott is a winner when it comes to the “luxury” properties. St. Regis, international W properties and some Luxury collection properties fit the “five star” class. Hilton’s only equivalent is Waldorf.
(I am a travel blogger on the side so feel free to pm me if anyone has any questions)!
this is GOLD!! THANK YOU!!
I do Marriott because they have the most properties so easiest to get elite status. I travel all over and I've never not found a Marriott. Also, I've found Marriotts to be nicer. Points wise they're similar.
