Following, I am new to this and I have received all kinds of advice on what I should do but nothing on what I should avoid. I would like to avoid any major or embarrassing mistakes is I can.
This was hinted at in the article; one of the biggest strategy mistakes you can make is going too prescriptive, too far out. As an example, my strategy has four sections: now, 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year. The actions and focus that comprise “now” are of course clearly defined and prioritized. The actions for the “1-year” are also well defined and prioritized. But beyond that, I don’t advertise details for the “3-year” and “5-year” portions. Each has a focus point/set of goals and expectations that are defined, but they are specifically kept open and flexible.
Assuming that a strategy is static and fixed once defined is also a mistake. Only the “now” and the overall goals are fixed. Everything else has to be able to adapt. I reassess my strategy every few months, both to move the parts that need moving from one section to another and to align with events that have occurred during that few months.
