Honest question. I have a retainer client that I’ve worked with for over 6mo. They pay in the beginning of the month for 40hrs of work ($4500). At the end of the month I submit a time sheet. Last month was on the slower end and added up to 30 hrs. This month they’re barely going to be at 10-15hrs tops. It’s already paid for but should I say anything? Suggest to keep some of it as credit? I feel bad charging for so little work but obv don’t want to rerun the money. What’s a proper thing to do?

Your paid for availability + work done. That’s a retainer. You should receive $4.5k for the month. Normal.

You’re getting paid for work getting done. I have clients I charge a flat rate and some months I I work more than others.

It’s ok. I’d suggest just moving the contract to just a flat rate without a time sheet

like

are you on hourly pay? then don’t worry about it

Have you checked in w the client twice a week for more work? Seems like that would be the best way to cover yourself. But I like what the producers above said, too.

Feels weird that you have to submit a timesheet if you’re on a flat rate retainer. Can you kill the timesheet and just continue on as you were? That’s what a retainer is, they are retaining you for your time whether they need it or not.

like

Sometimes timesheets are used to track billable to the client as well as internal profitability cost centers. And yes if you are consistently only working a small number of hours the agency will want to renegotiate the retainer at some point but for now enjoy and I wouldn’t flag anything for them. The move is theirs to make.

Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I am EOR on a number of structures in development, I manage EITs and Drafters (within projects; I'm not a supervisor), and am doing a lot in general. I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?
