Because in that average they count copywriters from branding, media, and PR agencies and art directors from design boutiques and production companies. Same titles, five different jobs, all paid differently.
CWs and ADs at the same level should get paid the same if you're in an ad agency environment (depending on your individual negotiations this can change but agency side they offer same range at same level). Don't let anyone tell you any different.
In my experience it’s partly because Art directors tend to have more specialized training earlier on, that gear them specifically towards an AD role - I.e. art school. Where as CW skillset and background is more generalized - only 1/4 of my CWs have communications backgrounds, many have writing or psychology or general backgrounds. As you climb the ladder it tends to even out quickly, but at lower levels there is a clear discrepancy
Yeah art director is a generic title that’s used for all sorts of very diff jobs. Same with copywriter. They get paid equally at agencies generally. Mid level creative is usually 65k-85k in big markets.
