I had one who was honestly, a dream. She was encouraging, extremely talented, positive and just fun to work with. Reviews were “hey this is a great start! Let’s think more about so and so or try something a bit different for so and so.” I could trust her and I felt like I could go to her with anything. I was my absolute best creative and happiest under her. That was 4 years ago.
@ECD I like you where do you work. You hiring?
Honestly, I’ve worked for some god-awful CDs most of my career. I’ve just adapted and took it as an occupational hazard. But one time, in a freelance assignment I worked with a CCO that I truly respected and admired. He retooled the entire creative department and its processes to be super efficient, which ended up making everyone’s job easier. As a consequence, the agency was empty at 6 pm, save a couple people. I worked on a pitch with them and even during a pitch most days everyone was out by 6. I was there for 3 weeks and stayed late two days and worked half a day-remotely during a weekend. Remember this was during a pitch. The rest of the time, the agency was empty at 6.
I know it took a lot of planning and foresight to implement his system, but he felt that respecting people’s time was not just important but a priority.
He was smart as a whip. Twisted dumb arguments from strategists into a pretzel if they were based on bullshit. He had the best bullshit detector in the business. Nobody could pull the wool over his eyes. He always asked super smart questions that left strategy and account services speechless. He always had suggestions that were so smart to make an idea better, but he never micromanaged and he wasn’t one of those CDs whose ideas competed with his team. He never uttered his own ideas, but he always knew how to make every idea better. When I grow up, I wanna be like that guy.
WHO IS THIS UNICORN
I don’t know them and I’m already stanning them so hard
Luckily I’ve had really great experiences with both. My first ECD hired me when my book was pretty much subpar, mediocre, I didn’t go to ad school and learned myself, so everyone was turning me down. He later told me he saw something in me and that’s why he gave me a shot, I ended up getting some really good work produce there.
Second shop, my significant other and best friend, both who I was living with, died tragically about a month apart, when I was only a month into the job. My CD actually came and found me while I was out of work to talk me through stuff. him, our ECD, and my ACD all let me take as much time off as I needed. They really look out for all of us
There are really great people in this industry, I’m sorry you’re having a bad experience but trust me, there’s great ones out there
I work at a startup so I get to report directly to the CCO. When I present my ideas, concepts, or layouts to him, he never rejects them. He makes them better and gives clear directions. Once I come back to him, he takes the time to ask me what I think works and what not. He shares his opinion and we make the decision together. It's very inspiring for a relatively new AD like me to have that experience because it gives me confidence knowing he trusts my eye and my gut. When I ask him his stories or previous experience, I always feel like I'm listening to a TED talk because I get a nugget of wisdom in some way or another. He's full of energy, very passionate about the work, and a great creative leader. I want to be like him one day so I can pass on the things I've learned from him.
