Have you worked on a functional behavior analysis to hypothesize the causes? It’s definitely not fun at the elementary level, I recommend fast-tracking whatever RTI/MTSS process you are using and get the resources available
I agree. MTSS Behavior or RTI are the way to go. Is the child identified as special ed?
All behavior has a function. You have to seek first to understand. Building a relationship and connection with the child will be the first steps to helping them eventually learn how to express themselves differently.
If you tier the behaviors from minor infractions to severe you can then determine what is the appropriate response. Most behavior problems have a root cause and are symptomatic of larger issues. More children are dealing with trauma. Quick identification and early intervention is the key. Check out pbis.org for behavior intervention ideas.
Exactly! Right on. Having some empathy for students with behavior issues goes a long way.
Not saying the behavior issue is allowed or acceptable.
It is so hard and frustrating when it occurs.
My first defense is helping parents understand that I am “for” their child!
We have worked to try and understand the triggers for these students and what acceleration looks like and what we can try before a student hits peak frustration. Definitely not fool proof, but helping with understanding, planning and keeping our own emotional reactions at bay
mindfulness room. we call it the calm room in our school. type in yoga Bridgeport school. good luck.
We utilize TCIS and have therapeutic support staff to help with deescalation. Students with outbursts should be assessed for an IEP and may need some mandated counseling to learn appropriate coping skills during times of dysregulation.
