I assume most stay at some time of firm. You won't really find opportunities to do M&A work in house
Some GCs with biglaw background just hire associates from biglaw because they are perceived as quick learners who can pick things up quickly. Essentially they are vetted by the system.
Doing commercial work isn't very difficult. You don't need commercial experience. You just need to understand contracts and follow the company playbook. Any competent lawyer can do it.

Focus on transferable skills and read the tech handbook or blog posts/AI about the main issues so you can talk intelligently and complete a contract exercise if they ask you to do one
