Do they have diverse play dates? I come from a country where kids grow up with different kinds of babies and the race issue isn’t so prevalent because your own best friends are from all over and it creates empathy at a young age. (Muslim WOC speaking)
What strikes me in America are the silos between people. The lack of empathy and friendships between people.
Books are great too as a complement! But experiencing a diverse upbringing first hand is truly powerful. And hereweread is awesome!
I know your baby is young but something to consider for the future! (Sorry not answering your question because I’m 6 months pregnant) :)
We are Asian and her best friends at school are a little blond boy and a little Indian girl. She also has German, Mexican, black, Indian, lgbtq uncles and cousins that she is regularly exposed to and plays with as well. So she’s definitely exposed to different cultures and we explain the differences and how everyone comes from various cultures and how special it is but how are all still one family. She speaks Vietnamese and Chinese (I am Viet and my husband is Chinese) and I explain how we have different words for the same thing because of our different cultures and how her uncle from Germany has his words for stuff too, and how cool that is. I feel she gets that people are different and it’s ok, but I’m not sure how to address racism yet. That some people are mean and you have to speak up to it? Is that a good way to approach this? I found a great link on NPR https://www.npr.org/2019/04/24/716700866/talking-race-with-young-children but I’d love to see how others are handling it too
