How are you preparing yourself for the next five years? It seems that the market is changing, and many accounting firms are looking for people who can do more than before. Is this because of AI? Will we be replaced soon, or will only a few higher level accountants survive and remain? Is it possible for a senior level accountant to stay in that role for more than 10 years? Does anyone stay in Tax without promotions or following a typical career ladder?

I just left my pre-seed startup that was running out of cash (we made $100,000 in revenue this year, and sunk $1m in costs). I was making $40,000 as a developer (plus 20k stock options at $1/share per year) and they refused to pay me any more money. I have 17,000 vested stock options, total number of shares at the time of my contract was 4million. I’m a bit confused about share dilution and if it’s worth it for me to buy some of my stock options… thanks in adv!

I’m an auditor who recently made the switch to advisory. When I was in audit, I could predict my schedule. I knew when I’d be busy (i.e. during busy season or interim) so I didn’t make plans during those weeks or those weekends. In advisory, my schedule has become less predictable. Twice now, I’ve been told about last minute deadlines that have forced me to work over a weekend and late into the evenings, interfering with prior plans I had made. Is this normal in advisory?
