I’m going through this. We had my mom come over for a month and my wifes’ mom so the same which bought us a couple of months. We considered having me ask for a part time schedule at reduced pay, but personally ended up goi my with a nanny who lives by herself and is super careful. My advice (take it as one data point) is to consider, only because of your sons condition, if one of you can do part-time or even unpaid full LOA for a more extended period. It may be a crappy 3-6 months living on a budget and deferring debt payments, but if it’s for the sake of family and health then it’s something to consider. Unfortunately for families where both of you work corporate America white collar jobs, it’s difficult under normal circumstances to have WLB, and much more so now. In 10-20 years you may just see this as that time you took a few months off from your 40-year long career to care for your family. Best of luck and stay safe
Your kiddos high risk condition is definitely an added complication.
We have a two year old who went to a home daycare with three other kids in the neighborhood. We’re about to start taking him back. But for us, we have established trust with the provider and the other families who we’ve been talking to for the last few months about how to coordinate this and stay as safe as possible.
And gosh this fist few months of learning how to take care of a little one are stressful enough as is. I feel for you now
FWIW, little kids are really safe from Covid. There were 660 moms that gave birth while sick, and of them, only 24 babies caught the bug. Of the 24, only 8 had symptoms, and 4 were premature and the symptoms could have been from that. None died. Definitely weigh your options, though.
Good luck Deloitte OP
We have our nanny still. It’s either that or take leave from your job. My parents used to do two days a week but disappeared when COVID started which has been challenging but had to do nanny. For your child the ultimately safest thing you can do is just take more leave until the vaccine. It really is up to you and your risk tolerance.
Obviously the health of my son is more important than anything else. Our pediatrician and nephrologist aren’t giving us clear guidance, basically saying there’s a lot we don’t know about the virus and “it’s up to us.”
I think we’re going to go without the nanny for a little and see how it goes. My mom might be able to come for a few weeks at a time but that’s going to bring its own risks and stress.
I know so many of us are struggling with these issues right now....any thoughts or considerations you can share?
Consider a live in nanny / au pair
Depending on where you are, you can also rent them a small apartment walking distance. Most agreements just say you need to provide room and board, not that it needs to be in your house.
