It depends where you are in life.
Eventually you’ll get tired of being treated like a commodity. Even if you have awards. I sure did.
Especially since non-pharma clients rarely buy anything anymore.
I made the switch last year. $25K raise. 40 hour weeks. More time to spend w/ my kids and writing screenplays. Best decision I’ve made in years.
Copy or art?
It’s all about upward trajectory, and I get the sense that pharma is the end of that trajectory
Don’t. Unless you’re on your way out. Then do.
It’s fine if you don’t mind working with people that think a brand or thematic color is an idea.
If you want more money go freelance. That will double your salary. Pharma is for checking out
Haven’t had that experience myself, maybe I’ve been lucky
Worth it if don’t mind making 60 second spots that include 30 seconds of legal VO. My advice… steer clear. It’s really hard to dig your way out of pharma at a senior level. Unless you’re content working for a paycheck with little expectation of gaining good book work.
I think you should also factor in the difficulty of the work, and whether you’re up to it. Being a writer in pharma is like learning another language, it’s extremely technical and it’s a far more strategic role than in general, and many who come in thinking they’ll be able to check out get a rude awakening.
A word of warning — it’s not terribly creative for copywriters on most healthcare accounts. Hope you have an adventurous client and regulatory team who will allow you to write to your full potential.
