Kudos are great but get to know your employee(s) and give them something they would appreciate. Where I worked previously, we would have monthly employee recognition ceremonies and would give recipients 1 paid day off. I give my employee gifts for work anniversaries and birthdays.
But the big ticket item is investing in their development (conferences, etc) or merit increases/promotions.
This depends on the person. Recognition is not the same for everyone. I would ask colleagues and team members what they value. At the end of the day, everyone wants to feel that they matter, what they do matters and that they are making a contribution.
