I knew it was time when I was consistently bringing in cases at previous firms, and the fees from those cases started exceeding what my former bosses were paying me. Plus, I ended up working for a guy that put me in some questionable positions more than once.
This happened around year six of practicing.
I continued doing what I was doing. My practice areas didn’t change, and I continued to practice in the same city.
You never truly overcome the fear of the unknown. Even as an associate, you’re placed in uncertain positions. Why not bet on yourself? Associate jobs will always be there. You can go back to working for someone if things don’t pan out.
I had to leave due to issues related to billing after maternity leave and my raise. I got on a court appointed list to get cases and have my own private cases as well. About 8 years of practice total. I stayed in my same field.
I get it. Sometimes the situation dictates the move. How has the transition been?
