How do I get into Product Management with no PM experience? I’m currently a second year analyst in the Tech consulting program at EY.

Consider also getting product management experience in your current role. Try to avoid lift and shift/ implementation, aim for custom engineering projects. In these projects, get experience performing market research, helping shape product strategy, writing user stories, working with UI/ UX, guiding developers, helping with testing and validation, etc.

like

Applied intelligence delivery and intelligent engineering services should both do this

You’re not gonna get a role at a reputable early stage startup as a PM. They’re already low on resources and they can’t afford to train someone fully on becoming a PM. I’d target APM programs, F500 company Product roles (THD etc), unicorn roles that you’re qualified for and THEN move internally, or get an MBA.

like

How did you get a consulting job without consulting experience?

like

Extremely poor anology. The point is that PM roles tend to require PM experience specifically. In contrast, consulting roles through regular recruitment never require specific experiences in any function / industry.

like

Most difficult path: APM program at google or FB
Easier but lower paying path: PM at a startup
Most expensive path but maybe better comp long term: MBA

You’re probably looking at unicorns or startups that are pre-ipo. Go down the line to pre-series A or B and they might be more in need of talent that they’ll take you. Which is why the pay/ risk is a significant downside with that route.

like

First ask yourself
1. Do you enjoy running calls all day?
2. Do you love playing with excel, gantt charts, project plans?
3. Can you talk non stop enthusiastically all day without knowing a bit of project?

If yes, then you can easily.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

(1/2) Hi all, based in the UK 🇬🇧, would appreciate your advice on how I could break into product management.

Context: Graduated in 2019 (Finance), 2 years at EY as a business consultant on mix of pmo projects and tech projects where I was developer (data vis, power platform, sql, vba, data analysis etc.). Joined Google on a 6 month contract as a data analyst.

Should I be applying for product analyst roles? Should I apply for strategy consulting? Could I go straight for prod mgmt roles?

Additional Posts in Consulting Exit Opportunities

I was just talking to a younger friend who goes to Cal and It seems like the kids these days hate FAANG or at least Amazon and Facebook are not desired at all. I personally don’t see too many issues working at either Amazon or Facebook because I work at Deloitte where I’m sure we have many questionable clients and worked in financial services before. Curious on whether people are thinking about the ethics of their exit company when deciding to move?

Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.

Hello, I have 4 years of experience between Financial decision support and pricing. However, I feel like my experience is too narrowed to how my current company operates. Any advices ?or thoughts ?

Here is my idea for a startup! I collect all the data from career transitions and use Data Analytics to predict the most likely career transitions. I could start with consulting. What do you guys think about this? I would be able to predict based on your firm(mbb, big4), your experience, which role you are likely to move (Faang pm, strategy manager, move to mbb). I have all the data to do this, but wanted your thoughts. Would the output of this be relevant to you?
