Experience is your best friend this early in your HR career. Take on a few stretch projects at your company and discover what areas of HR you like the most - comp/ben, employee relations, org/talent dev, talent acquisition, people analytics, etc. Once you have enough experience to qualify for the PHR or SHRM-CP, passing one of those exams is a good stamp of credibility especially if you’ll want to make the jump from coordinator to another HR role with a broader scope at a different company. If comp/ben are of interest then WorldatWork certifications are also reputable and possibly worthwhile, but you’ll need to be sure that’s the direction you want to go because most of their certifications require 7-10 relatively expensive exams.

I’m a new patent prosecution associate and unfortunately only just now realized that maybe prosecuting patents isn’t something I want to do long term. I loved copyright (and trademark) in law school, but I have loans to pay off. Should I stick it out in my current role to pay them off before I jump ship to a new practice area or will I be pigeonholed forever to patents if I stay here for 2-3 years?

Looking for advice on what to do with clients if I want to go in-house. We have 5 other attorneys so as of now my clients could likely be absorbed into the rest of the law firm. However if 1-2 of the attorneys here left that wouldn’t be an option. Has anyone done this and have tips?I don’t have an offer yet but I’m trying to prepare. My firm knows I’m exploring this as a career option.

I have been invited to move up to the junior partner level in my mid-sized insurance defense/medical malpractice defense firm, but the terms essentially make me an independent contractor. Looking for suggestions on how to break into this space.

I'm a RN who's worked in sales for 14 years within the industrial and energy spaces. Yea, I know, super random for a nurse, but I excelled greatly.

I still work weekends as a nurse and would love to combine my business acumen with my education by working for a pharma, biotech, or medical device company.

I've applied for these types of jobs and get nowhere. But when I apply to engineering organizations I get called immediately.

My background is 12+ years in customer/client experience, coaching, sales, and account management. I’m finishing a Lv7 executive coaching course and starting a CIPD Lv5 people management course.

For those of you who spent the time and money to get the PHR or SHRM certifications, do you feel that it actually strengthened your professional capabilities as on HR professional, or did you just do it to fit into the “HR Professional” crowd?

Hi all, I need some advise. I am coming up on a one year review for in a medium size company in Oregon. I work as an HR manager (department of one) but essentially am working as a director of operations taking on much more than HR related tasks. As my review is approaching, I was hoping for insight on salary and how to handle a role restructure during this meeting. Currently I am making $56k with 4 years relevant experience (but not HR). Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!
