How do we feel about Customer Success Manager in tech as an exit? My gut tells me it’s chill and decently paying but kinda menial customer service firefighting type work and might pigeonhole me/be limiting in terms of career path. Am I right? Wrong? Lots of ex MBB in these roles at the company that reached out to me so wondering what I’m missing. Lifestyle job or serious career?

My company is getting rid of that function because it’s mostly useless and most customers don’t dare for it (I’m in cybersecurity)

Don’t care* ops

Customer success manager is basically the liberal arts major of a university. Super low barrier to entry and low upward mobility.

If you want to exit to a tech company, you want roles like business value advisory, business development, rev ops, etc.

likefunny

Lolol not me being a lib arts major and considering moving from consulting to CSM 😂

funny

The equivalent of a wine tasting major in tech. Low barrier to entry. It is essentially glorified customer service. Do with that info what you will.

funnylike

You won’t be competitive for most core tech industry jobs because most positions either require engineering skills or the candidates you are competing with have engineering skills.

I used CSM to pivot into being a TPM and then a product manager. CSM is what you make of it. Can be a training a week and a couple phone calls and then you check out or you cash get deeply involved with the customer and become integrated into your companies prioritization for product and engineering.

likehelpful

I am applying for a CSM role but I ultimately want to end up working for product. How did you exactly pivot from CSM to product??

like

More of a lifestyle job. Wide range in quality of CSMs cause honestly the entry barrier is low (basically don’t need any technical skill)

It’s a pretty chill job but you gotta bug a lot of people for customer escalations. I’m always annoyed when CSMs reach out about dumb requests.

like

Depends. In customized technical products (ex. bespoke chips for Sony), the CSM is very involved in product lifecycle development because they are getting feedback directly from the customer. In COTS products, it's customer support.

So I work for a small company as a SEM/Director… which in my world just means I am really Lead Developer, Part BA and part product owner as well as reviewing the devs. I came up in this company starting at about SE3 of 5 so the position is just kind of what I made it. Why would a luxury watch brand make/sell connected or smart watches? What is the business reason for it? To me it just kills the brand value. For instance I was a big fan of Montblanc but after I see their smart watch line up I instantly devalued the brand in general. Same for Tag (tag is questionable anyways), or Breitling. I miss music. Like actual bands with instruments and vocal ability. Feels like the music industry is so hollowed out that multi-member instrumental bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and even Metallica are no longer able to take root.

There are a few talented individual singers (Adele) a lot of awful mumble rappers, but no actual bands that will stand the test of time. Before I get called a Boomer, the problems with the music industry for new artists are well documented.
