Do not be put off if you see a job listing that shows an absurd number of applicants. A lot of times those sites are really showing you the number of people who clicked through to the application process. But most people probably do not go through the process and submit a completed application. That number, the actual serious applicants, is always much smaller. So just apply and don't worry about the numbers.
I don't think age has anything to do with the terrible job market right now. If you can do the job and provide value to a team who cares how old you are? Plus your extensive experience and skills should help you stand out from the rest of the competition. The problem might come if you are changing careers because some employers just don't like to hire older people in entry level positions. Best of luck OP.
I'm being laid off, but I haven't been in this position very long. Which saddens me. There are great career coaches out there. There are also a lot of them. I like one in particular, Andrew LaCivita https://youtube.com/@andylacivita?si=E2m2oQ-H2oR1m9p- ... He has a lot of great, free content on YouTube. Does lives every Thursday, and you can submit questions. I've asked plenty. He's on LinkedIn and everywhere else, too. His videos are a great place to start. What you're going to really find out is that networking is the way to find the position you'll land. Don't be afraid to send a message through LinkedIn to a recruiter or if it's a smaller company, an HR, or an owner. I like to stick to applying to companies that are local, even if they are actually global. Living in an area where a company has an office is a plus. A lot of companies want hybrid not 100% remote, depending on the job. Don't be afraid to just jump in. Mistakes will be made, but that's the best way to learn. You got this!
I got laid off last November after 10+ years. I've applied for over 170 jobs and only gotten 3 interviews.
That's not uncommon at all. I've been laid off several times since mtg crisis in 2008. Each time I'm laid off I send 400 to 3000 (and more) resumes out. Only 2022/2023 did I get 7 to 10 interviews at my max laid off period. Those included being ghosted after 1..2 interviews and 2 companies who were intl trying to take a stab at USA business but for jobs that pd $775 -100k, they were proud to offer $35-50k. They obviously hadn't done their homework re USA salaries. So those opprtys were trashed after 2 interviews each. Jobsearching is NOT for the faint of heart.
