Touch on it briefly. After the major shift in leadership and expectations, you knew the role was ultimately no longer the right fit. You learned from it and then talk about why that new company is the right fit.

Just tell them your company was sold and they had a reorg and let a few people go, including you.
Keep it simple and no one will care.
Best wishes.

You'll need a story that works, and it has to be personal. Generic BS won't read authentic when you're discussing. Clear out an hour, and think strategically about what is both true and makes you look good.

Omit the part about being unable to meet expectations. If it was me, I would talk about the sale and how the new ownership decided to shake up the organization. This happens often when companies are bought out - new ownership wants to hire its people and put its stamp on things.

Your old company legally cannot share any details of the reason for separation. They can verify thst you worked there and no longer do, that's it.

That said, I recommend that you formulate a version of the truth that side steps perceived performance issues, namely because you genuinely don't know the real truth there. Performance is commonly used as a way to let someone go with minimal fight or benefits. Focus on the positives and the message can be that you are looking for more from your career than the previous company could offer. New/different experience, better comp, etc.

I wouldn’t focus on it too much

The company merged with another and I was let go, along with many peers

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Does anyone have suggestions for what a salary should be for a Digital Marketing Analyst | Paid Social & Performance Media? I have 1 year of experience, the job asks for 0-1 year of experience. I feel I over meet the qualifications in some areas and just meet them in others. The recruiter said 50k is the salary the company is offer. I know I can negotiate. What are your thoughts on what the salary should be?

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

Got an offer for Sr. Financial Analyst for 85k & 10% annual bonus. What's a good counteroffer? I told the recruiter 95k-110k when I first interviewed. This position is 100% remote, headquartered in VA. I live in NYC. Have roughly 2 YOE.

Thanks.

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
