Should never be mandatory but should be expensive
Rising Star
As an attorney, at least in private practice, there was no such thing as “after hours”. Nowadays I am in house and “business hours” have more of a meaning, but I now travel more for work and I’ve had days that go from 7:30am-midnight while traveling internationally with half of that time being team bonding.
One day I started “work” at 7:30am with my team at a resort in the Italian wine country and didn’t get back to my room until 12:30am with the preceding 4 hours being spent at a winery for a tour and a 5 course dinner and 12 course wine tasting. So it was “work” but it was not “work”.
Mandatory raises my hackles but I appreciate a quarterly opportunity to socialize.
I think anything after work hours is asking for trouble.
There better be booze and food
Some places need it. It would probably work wonders at the company where I work.
We don't have team bonding events. But we do have dinners with the partners. I hate these, but I never miss them. You have to play the game.
Forced socializing can really feel performative and draining. But if you find people you trust and like and can build relationships that can outlast the job, that could be worth it. Also, I think the employer should compensate people somehow for taking up their time outside of work
Horrible. Mandatory is ridiculous.
I call them "mandatory fun.",
