How do you feel about your firm’s approach to handling separations?
BDO’s approach is to call with HR on the line and say we made a strategy change and your role is eliminated effective today. HR will take it from here. Hang up. If “people first” is part of our purpose, then actions toward people, especially at tough times, represents the truth. Even purpose aside, some who are separated join clients and advance. Remaining staff don’t feel good or believe the purpose.

In the interview process for a City Attorney office position. Is it ok to reach out to a current attorney in the office to get intel? For context, I don’t actually have a connection to this person other than I learned through the interview process that they too are from my law school. High likelihood that that person tells the interviewers I’ve reached to get intel. Is it OK/fair game for me to contact this person or not?

So I have my bachelors in criminal justice and I just finished my paralegal certificate course today. My attorney should be making partner this year. With that being said I told her that I would complete my certificate by the summer around the time she would make partner. I work at a Financial Institution and have recently been approached about a Director role with my prior company. My key learning thus far in my career: Noone gives a shit about your ideas unless you're a head honcho. Real change is brought about from a position of authority.
