Resist the temptation to project your desire (everyone’s desire) for a well-paid, prestigious, challenging, good WLB firm, onto the “boutique” concept. Reality is there’s very few of them, they vary wildly, and if they were so great there’d be insane competition to join them.
Soooo work life balance may not be a thing in a boutique depending on how prestigious it is. I billed over 2400 a year at the lit boutique I worked at.
I usually ask around quietly, former clerks, law school mentors, or even recruiters can be super helpful. Chambers and Partners and Vault can give some clues too. I'm not familiar with DC boutique firms, but I would agree with the above that the WLB might be overstated sometimes in boutique
My lit boutique in DC may be hiring juniors. No billable hr requirement!
