How do you get over the feeling that you’re not good enough for your job?

Sometimes it just takes time. I started my career in the retail bank, moved to a wire house, then to a couple of large wealth firms and now back to to retail bank. I always performed well for the most part except at the wire house and 1 of the large wealth firms. The wire house was sink or swim and had no mentor, guidance, or proper training. The wealth firm was just not what they promised. For 2 years I barely met my goal, and was told my performance needed to improve, made to feel like I could lose my job at any moment, and essentially that I wasn’t good enough. My confidence too a huge hit and I wondered if this was the industry for me after I was already 9 years in. Finally landed where I am today and things are great. I realize I’m great at what I do and add value to the lives of my clients. Give it some time unless you just know this isn’t the career for you.

How old are you?
These things tend to disappear with age.

23 yr veteran. Still feel that way. :/

How does everyone bill for family law matters? Do you always bill hourly or is there some flat fee, monthly or quarterly fee structure that could work, even in contested matters? I have cases that the clients end up spending $20-$40,000 on a contested divorce and this is really out of their budget. I feel that if my firm could charge a flat fee of $10-$15,000, it would still be beneficial from a client predictability and volume standpoint and would generate more referrals.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
