I didn't live up to their expectations in terms of technical skills. Other people I know got coached out for not working enough or for being too confrontational. The basic question you have to ask yourself is: Does my team still want to keep me, and if not, will other teams want to take me on? If the answer is no, the firm will probably want you to leave.
Keep your head up, guys. In all honesty, it will feel like it sucks; your confidence takes a hit, but if you take a step back and let the dust settle, you’ll see that they are doing you a favor. You’ll end up somewhere better, with a much better work/life balance, nice bump in pay, and better benefits...assuming you don’t stay in PA.
Good luck...things are only on the rise from here!
Thanks for the support! No PIP yet but I expect it to follow soon. I'm a Senior with CPA. I totally understand why they would only want high performers on the team and I totally agree that long term, PA is not the right career for me. But I was still surprised at the speed of being coached out. I just reread my prior year evaluations and people had lots of nice things to say. I thought after my first bad review cycle they would put me on another engagement, require courses, have me "repeat the year" etc. The same thing is happening to someone else, also for knowledge issues, so it's not an isolated situation. I always thought that they quickly give up on people with bad attitude and conflicts but would give people who lack skills but are eager to improve more of a chance. I thought wrong.
Sounds like they overhired. In my office's asshole culture, it'd be laughable to coach someone out for being confrontational. Don't take it personal.
You will literally be told this job isn’t for you and you need to start looking for employment elsewhere
Hang in there EY 1. If you don’t mind me asking what level are you and do you have cpa? Did they just straight up tell you to look elsewhere without putting you on pip?
Haha are you sure ^
Damn that’s rough. Good luck to anyone going through this .
EY1, what area and line of service are you in?
Many firms would be happy to give you another chance, I am sure. You may be able to get in at senior level in a regional firm and learn their ways. You can always use the difference of culture and big 4 hours as a reason to leave EY.
Good luck! I know you'll be fine if you try hard to find a good match for yourself.
If they have someone “repeat the year” does that mean they still have faith they can do better?
It’s just happens because people will not put you in positions to succeed .
Can’t explain but you have to sense it .
Pal? Lol
Yes, I'm being coached out and was told to start looking elsewhere and that they would like me to find a good place somewhere else.
What does it take to be coached out
Pouring one out for you EY1 :(
^ yes
Unfortunately, it well depend on your leadership. If you are delivering on your side and you know it, but get overlooked ... and then a partner says .. we want you to be happy, we can find a spot at a client and always good to have a friend of the firm on the client side .... very subtle, but I've seen it happen, they are coaching you out ..... then it is clear that leadership does not value you. Accept the calls and invites for opportunities elsewhere. Surely your skills will be appreciated and valued and most importantly you should have fun working (which is probably not the case where you are now).
Have you had a meeting with your pal to talk about your performance? Was the talk about improving? Was it mainly negative? Did you get out on a pip?
It was clear from the conversation that there was no option to improve and the only option was to leave. It really is an up or out culture. No PIP. That was mentioned later in my discussion with my counselor.
