How do you strike a balance between doing extras at work because you enjoy it and are pushing for promotion, while not letting it completely take over your life? I’m realizing how in the last two years I’ve let work and the related social scene become my whole world.

You need to know how you want your life to look like. Work-life balance looks different for everyone. For me, I want to come home to my family every night at a decent time. I want to have a little quality time daily with my husband, go to my son’s every game, wait it out at my daughter’s every dance class practice, help my kids with homework, eat dinner with the family and do bed/bath time routines with the kids. Sometimes I log in to work from 2 till 6 am to stay ahead of my workload if my next day’s schedule is going to be filled with family stuff. When it was time to pursue promotion, I put it in extra grind for a year or two then fall back to a more family friendly schedule. Knowing my priorities and the order in which they should be kept were key to my WLB.

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

Should I leave my company? Got an offer from a big bank’s operation department (fund reporting analyst), currently at EY faas and I’m not happy here, should I stick it out here until I get promotion or jump now? What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far.
