Depends on how long you'll be out for, but other than timing (e.g. if you take 6 months off right before evaluations in a promo year), I don't think it'll matter much. At worst, it may delay the promotion slightly but your career is a marathon and it's not worth your well-being. Mental health challenges can qualify as a disability so look into FMLA, and any company/state benefits (e.g. short term disability). I took over a year off to take care of my mental health and it was worth it.

I took 2 months off and it all worked out
