@OP I got a library card and I check out audiobooks on CD. Alternatively, they also have downloadable versions that expire a week after your virtual "check out". They don't incur late fees though.
Audible is great you get a credit every month and you can buy any book you want with that credit. They usually have sales to purchase multiple books with one or two credits
