How does working at a small funds group in a big firm (e.g., Wilson Sonsini, etc.) compare to a bigger group in mid-law (e.g., Kleinberg Kaplan, etc): In terms of training, exits, WLB, comp?

The big firm name goes a long way when going in house especially if you are changing markets, but getting a breadth of training at a firm that specializes funds can be extremely helpful if you are stuck doing the same work at a big firm. Biglaw comp is big law comp but any funds work at a midlaw firm is probably going at least a comparable if not just a little lower

Ah didn't realize a very small funds group in Biglaw would open more doors. Thanks!

Ok, I’m gonna say this. Schools should open. Now hear me out. My wife is a family doctor, she is working insane hours, she is treating covid patients, and there is a lot of days when she has to stay at the hospital without coming home. My neighbour works in a local grocery store, so he has been at work since the Day 1 of lockdown. So if you need medical help, or want to eat, it’s ok for those people to be at work, but their kids have to stay home? Cont’d >>

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.

I had one of those VERY nonproductive days today. I think I accomplished maybe an hour of billable work, even though I had a bunch of stuff to do. I just came off a 300 hour month, and unexpectedly got a continuance on a deadline on Wednesday, and it’s like all of my motivation leeched out of me at once.

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
