It's a little bit weird that they asked you what your citizenship is, but not really that weird to me, I guess. I'm not really sure what somebody "clearly born and raised Canadian" means, so maybe I misunderstanding something. I've had people ask me about my citizenship and residency and I didn't think much of it, but the experience part probably would've made me feel like they didn't know what they were doing because it's clear that I have tons of experience.
On my resume, it says that I have work experience only in montreal and toronto and schooling in montreal. I am white Caucasian with no foreign accent. If you live in canada, you know who born and raised canadians are
I feel like it being asked during the interview specifically is wildly inappropriate. I can understand applications or screening questions about whether you are legally allowed to work in the country, but it feels icky to be asked that during the interview when it should already be established imo. Then a text at night? 🚩🚩🚩
It is appropriate to ask if you are able to legally work in the US. That might involve a citizenship question as it pertains to your status here in the US. If you were to be hired, the appropriate documents would have to be offered and inspected. It’s a fine line though. If it were brought up outside of the question of being able to legally work in the US, that’s definitely sus.

Yeah that’s super weird. If they’re immigrants too, maybe their English isn’t great. Maybe they wanted to ask if you were legally able to work, but didn’t know how to say it, so then asked your citizenship status. Also, I feel like these days, the U.S. government is just making a lot of people scared to hire non-US people because you just don’t really know their true legal work status. Who knows. I’d just move on. The place would have been sketchy to work at anyway.
