Spent some time there. My experience was not the best: while I met some pretty great people at Mercer, most of them have moved on from the organization like I have. There’s high turnover at almost all levels due to low comp and high burn, and not much mobility within the organization to do projects outside of your function. Pretty much zero regard for meaningful compensation increases at year end, with bonuses always slashed and way under target due to unrealistic growth goals set by executive leadership.
Much of the firm is actuarial in personality; from my experience, if you aren’t credentialed, you will find it difficult to gain credibility and respect amongst those types including many leaders in the firm who tend to be actuaries themselves.
Senior leadership gave the perception that they would rather line executive and shareholder pockets through buybacks and dividends rather than investing in the business and their loyal people. While they might start you out at a competitive salary, you’ll surely get slapped with pitiful raises (I’m talking 0-1%) and dwindling bonuses year after year, (including promotion years), regardless of your performance.
Unless you’re an experienced actuary, or being considered for a Principal II / Partner and above position with them, I would not recommend Mercer. If you are; then go for it, you’ll likely be treated better than the rank and file.
