When is a 3 page resume acceptable?
l am currently a rising junior in

Amazon as a Business Analyst. I
would really like to break into
product management and believe in
my 5 weeks so far I have shown skills
to back that up. Would it be
acceptable to ask my manager to

AWS cloud application architect. Had an on-site interview with AWS a few days ago and just got an email saying they want to talk to me about next steps. The role is cloud application architect but I want to ask them about the senior cloud application architect role. I have all the relevant experience for that role and feel like I’d be a better fit for that senior role. How should I approach this conversation? Is this even possible? Amazon

36 years old, $439k. I started contributing around 12 years ago, but there have been some periods of unemployment during that time. I was a financial advisor in my prior life, so I feel relatively good where I’m at, but know that I need to really start turning up my contributions.
Been contributing 27.5 years to my 401k.
I had a rollover over from another job prior of $5k. I now have $1.75 M.
Until Jan 2024 I had a 8% company match that I got for 16 years. That has been replaced with 0% match. Now I get 5% in a pseudo Bond-like "pension" held by IBM at t-bond interest rates. And before that we had a cash balance "pension" for the first 10 years I worked here. Together they are another $100k.
How do I feel? Well I had a defined pension plan that guaranteed me 1/3rd of my salary for life. They stole that early in my career and gave me these t-bag pensions at t-bond rates, sometimes credited at less than 1%. They promised 8% returns but lol.
We are cash poor because I have sacrificed everything to contribute to my 401k because I wanted a great retirement full of travel. Even with nearly 1.9M I won't generate enough income to replace what the execs pocketed. It was a very well funded pension too...
I expect to be laid off in a few months and apparently I can't get another job that pays as well without moving. At 60, I will not uproot my family. I got an offer paying 40% less than I make but with two kids still in college and $200k mortgage left on my house, I don't really feel ready. Would be nice to get 5 more years but that may not happen now.
Yeah I know, poor little me with $1.75M. But I sacrificed everything for nearly 30 years and I will be lucky to get $80k per year income and I expect under Trump/Musk to see full retirement pushed to at least 70.
God I hate this forking company...
Luigi.
On a more serious note, I am so sorry to hear you’ve been stiffed. I hope you get whatever you deserve, my friend
2 years, 48k. I would say yes, im only 26.
That's about where I'm at. 3 years and 55k. I'm 29 so I think I'm also headed in the right direction, but I do wish my employer contributed more.
7 years, 276k, 35. Stopped maxing out two years ago to invest in other opportunities.
What made you not continue the 401k and just add additional funds to your other investments. I'm pretty much In the same exact situation. So I'm curious.
10 years, 29 310k. Needed 10% of my income by 30 to be on track and I’m double that so hopeful I can retire early.
Got lucky with an IPO I put in my Roth IRA.
🤣 look at all the responsible adults who got it right... I'm 34 with $19k in my account.
On the bright side, im a homeowner with 77k equity in the house.
I’m 45 and sitting at 415k…mine took some time to take off because I was concerned about my risk level and wasn’t making much, but I upped my level to aggressive and I utilize a managed acct service thru Empower (record keeper my company uses) that makes transfers for me. I’m still at 6% as that’s what my company uses at will match. I am looking at converting some to Roth IRA down the road. Ultimately I’m pretty happy with the direction it’s going considering what I see that average is at my age.
I’m 58, wife’s 51. Combined about $1.5M and we have other investments. Not what I’d necessarily say makes us ready for retirement but that’s mostly because I’ve seen folks who were too young to qualify for Medicare end up on the verge of BK. Our oldest is also only 13 so that pushes things out.
32, $296k I was just doing some research on this!
How much 401(k) matching does your employer offer? Mine offers a 50% match on contributions made, up to $3,000 annually. Is it good?
My company will match 4% if I put in 8 (which I do)
27yrs old. 107k in 401(k), 20k in Roth IRA. 3years work experience.
Not including other investments
$1M+, contributed for 20 years, 45 yo, maxing the last 10-15. Now investing outside of the 401k to retire early since I no longer have a match.
I’m 55 and my combined IRA accounts and 401k (i rolled over my 401k balances to a self directed IRA every time I changed jobs) is 5.2 million as of today. I have to say that the decision to self direct my investments by buying stocks directly instead of mutual funds in my 401k was a game changer. It’s risky, but the rewards can be much higher since you are allowed to hold onto your winners. In mutual funds, managers must constantly rebalance the portfolio so winners are never given the chance to keep growing exponentially. As Peter Lynch says, “it’s like pulling out your flowers to water the weeds.” I started about 29 (I was in grad school).
Morning:
Early thirties. I have about 25K in my 401K. I never saw it as a way to reach my financial goals for retirement.
My wealth is spread about 1.5 million in one home (paid off) and another home with about 300 K in equity. 100K in stocks and bonds that I actively trade.
I have a savings/rainy day fund that oscillates between 60-80K. I’ve been part of layoffs twice in the past 4 years. I think that has been very disruptive to my career and financial goals.
I have been part of three startup acquisitions as an early employee.
That, coupled with learning how to actively trade derivatives, invest in RE, luck, and be in the right place at the right time, has been the most significant contributor.
That's all you need to know. Salary and "TC" don't mean much, IMHO.
If you want a number I will say that compared to 9 years ago, when I first started, my salary has increased by 180% ;)
Do what you will with that.
54 YO, $855k. Been maxing my contribution for 5-7 years. Husband is 49 YO and around $700k
Late wife and I combined IRAs over 30years, $2.7m.
30 years old - $45k. A bit behind but maxed it for the first time last year after a big promo and have also been maxing my Roth and HSA for the past few years so not too worried about where I’m at currently.
Been contributing ~2.5 years and have 19k. Had a job hop in between there so haven’t had any employer contributions vest
Am 26 y/o*
$92k. I started late because of citizenship issue and where to live. Started 401k in 2022. Hope to get to $2m at 55.
43 at $350k. Started maxing 3 years ago. Current employer matches at 2% previous employer matched 5% + 4% pension but was only making half of my current salary at the previous employer. Feeling okay about it to retire at 59.5.
