I’d say that anything under 6 months you’re good. 6-12 months starts to become more questionable, 12 months plus is when id say it becomes red flag.
Exception: Maternity/ Parental leave
The problem is with health issues and/or mental health is that you may find yourself having to justify a long gap, which you may or may not feel comfortable doing.
Also, if you take an extended leave, don’t necessarily expect to return at the same level. Recognize that there is a recency bias that’ll come into play, so if you’re being compared to other candidates who are currently (or just left) a role of equal value to your last role but you had an extended leave - then your application will be look at as being less competitive. Therefore, you may have to drop down a level to re-climb this wonderful corporate world we slave our lives away in!
If you make it sound fun, people are surprisingly receptive. "I traveled to gain fresh perspective and think about what I really want and that is to work for you." works often (not always). They're like "ooohhh I'm so jealous"
Agree, make it interesting rather than I just stayed home.
You could also pretend you are doing consulting as a placeholder for your gap
