How many billable would allow for a good work life balance?

If I had a traditional IRA before being employed in a 401k eligible role, can / must I roll that IRA into the 401k or can I leave the accounts separate without deleterious tax consequences?

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. As things start to open up fully, some of my institutional clients are sending notices that we are expected to do X activity over zoom from here on out (things we used to do in person). Clearly it’s a cost cutting measure. Anyone else feel like filing for telephonic appearance so the insurance company can save a buck isn’t going to sit well with judges who prefer in person attendance? I’m a private immigration attorney whose interested into transitioning into a high level federal government attorney position in the future (not in this administration). Ideally, I’d love to work in the solicitor general’s office.

I’m only a year or two into practice and am wondering if there are any tips to best position myself for this type of position? I don’t anticipate making any moves that way for at least 5 more years. No clerking experience or law review, so that’s -2 points for me
