Well you’d at least get promoted to senior. You just have to pass to make manager.
Chief
I started with a person who remained at the firm as an associate for eight years, as the years went on they started taking on more senior and manager type tasks but obviously their pay was capped, very nice person, did great work, but I had to question their intelligence a little bit not just because they couldn’t pass the exam but because they liked doing senior and manager level work for an associates salary.
Rising Star
I know someone who has been at PwC for 12+ years, never took the exam and most likely never will. They were an associate until a few years ago when PwC changed the rules. They are now a senior whereas their peers are now directors.

I'm a 40 year old senior. My peers are PPMDs and senior managers. Do yourself a favor and do whatever it takes to pass if you plan on staying in public accounting.

Depends on your group too. You can be a senior in some groups without a credential.
