How much do you save?
First year. Other than maxing out my 401K, I haven’t been saving up much but rather have been spending money splurging, eating out and rent. So basically, my take home salary has all been used paying out credit card balance. I want to get out of this cycle and start saving up (obviously stopping wasting money on stupid shit). My rent is around 5000/month, and I plan on moving out after two years so I don’t have much room. How much should we be ideally saving every month?

I'm a third year in SF. I max out my 401k, contribute an extra 3k/month to after tax bucket (automatic Roth rollover) of 401k, max out HSA, and have been saving about $7k/month post tax for a down payment.

Try a meal plan service, it’ll save you on eating out and you’ll probably eat more healthy that way too.

Your rent is insane. Get a place for half that amount and you’ll save at least an additional $2500 each month.

5k!! Where do you live! Are you married with kids?

I save about $4400 a month (includes 401k, IRA, cash, other savings accounts, etc.). For reference I am a 2nd year associate, large market, not market comp, but amlaw 200.

Take home is 10k a month. I haven’t saved anything. Paying my loans down aggressively so I can leave big law after a year and live my best life! Trying to save at least 5k by next September and find a job 80k range.

Hi all, I am a 4th year chemistry PHD student (International/Indian) and will surely finish in about a year, around Aug23. It can work for pharma (Merck, Pfizer, GSK etc.) as a scientist. Or do I need to get some big brand name on my CV to do the transition?
